Hyperbaric Oxygen

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy, or HBOT, is a supportive therapy used to help improve oxygen delivery throughout the body, including the brain. During treatment, you relax in a pressurized chamber while breathing concentrated oxygen. This process allows more oxygen to dissolve into the blood plasma and reach tissues more efficiently, including areas where circulation or oxygen delivery may be reduced.

For patients focused on brain recovery and neurological function, HBOT is often used as part of a broader care plan to support healing, recovery, and overall brain performance. By increasing oxygen availability at the tissue level, HBOT may help support the brain’s natural repair processes, promote healthier cellular function, and create a better environment for recovery.

How HBOT works

Inside the chamber, air pressure is increased above normal atmospheric levels. In this setting, your body is able to take in and transport more oxygen than it typically would under normal conditions. That added oxygen circulates through the bloodstream and into tissues throughout the body.

This increase in oxygen availability may help support several important processes involved in recovery, including circulation, tissue repair, cellular energy production, and the body’s natural response to inflammation. In neurological care, this can make HBOT a valuable tool for patients who need added support for brain healing and function.

How HBOT may support brain recovery and function

Support for brain healing

HBOT may help create a more favorable environment for recovery by improving oxygen delivery to brain tissue. This can be especially helpful for individuals recovering from concussions, traumatic brain injuries, strokes, or other neurological challenges.

Support for cognitive function

Some patients use HBOT as part of a plan to improve focus, mental clarity, processing, memory, and overall cognitive performance, especially when brain fog, fatigue, or slowed thinking are part of the picture.

Support for inflammation and recovery

By improving tissue oxygenation, HBOT may help support recovery in patients dealing with ongoing inflammation, stress on the nervous system, or slower healing after injury.

Support for cellular energy

Oxygen plays an essential role in how cells produce energy. By increasing oxygen availability, HBOT may support mitochondrial function and the energy demands of healing tissues, including the brain.

Support for overall neurological rehabilitation

HBOT is often used alongside other therapies as part of a comprehensive recovery plan. It can be one tool within a broader strategy that may also include diet, lifestyle changes, rehabilitation, supplementation, and other individualized therapies.

What a session is like

During an HBOT session, you rest comfortably in a clear chamber while breathing concentrated oxygen in a pressurized setting. Sessions are commonly scheduled for 60, 90, or 120 minutes, depending on the individual and the goals of care.

Treatment frequency varies. Some patients come 1 to 3 times per week, while others may benefit from a more intensive schedule for a period of time, depending on their history, symptoms, and overall treatment plan.

How many sessions are needed

The right number of sessions depends on the individual, the condition being addressed, and the goals of treatment. Some people benefit from a shorter series, while others may need a more extended plan for deeper or more complex recovery work.

In general, care may include:

  • An initial phase with more frequent sessions
  • A moderate phase based on progress and response
  • A maintenance phase for ongoing support, when appropriate

Recommendations are always tailored to the person, not based on a one-size-fits-all formula.

HBOT as part of a personalized care plan

At our center, hyperbaric oxygen is used thoughtfully and strategically as part of a personalized plan based on your history, examination findings, goals, and overall clinical picture.

For the right patient, HBOT can be a valuable tool to support brain recovery, cognitive function, and neurological resilience.
